Polka Dots!

Hey everyone! Once again, it's been quite awhile since my last post. Once I really get going with this blog, and learn what the heck I'm doing, I hope to post more often. If anyone has any helpful hints, please feel free to share them!! (See my first post ever for more on how hopeless I am lol!)

So, I recently, with great help from my mother and my husband, redid my daughters' room. I wanted to take some before pics, but Jeremy and Mom surprised me while I was at work and got the first coat of paint on. That's OK . . . . it's not hard to imagine "before". It was white. Plain white walls. That was it.

My 2 daughters are aged 5 and 7. My youngest will have a birthday in 2 weeks, so she's eagerly looking forward to her 6th birthday. Her favorite color is purple (like me!) and my 7 year old's favorite color is pink. They both wanted their room to be their favorite color, so of course we came up with a compromise . . . . purple walls with pink polka dots!

The room was SO fun and SO easy to do!! We gave it two coats of this beautiful lavender, and after the 2nd coat was dry, I came in and did the polka dots!! Originally, I had seen some stencils at Hobby Lobby for ginormous polka dots, but when it came time to do this project, I discovered they no longer carried them. What to do?!?! No way could I freehand them . . . . I can't draw a good circle to save my life! So I looked around HL, and found stencils blanks. I bought one package of blanks that had 3 sheets of 12"x18" blanks for $3.99 and headed for my Cricut Expression. Using good 'ol George, I cut a 10" circle (the biggest it would let me for some reason), an 8", and a 4". (I had to use a multi-cut of 4 with the blade set on 6 and with max pressure . . . . these sheets seemed very thin and pliable, but they turned out to be pretty tough!). Then I just went around the room 3 times, starting with the 10" circle and placing them randomly, then I did the same with the 8", finishing with the 4" and filling in wherever it looked right. The stencils were easily held up again and again with painter's tape, and taken down just as easily. Each polka dot only needed one coat, and I had the entire room completed in less than 2 hours . . . . and had a lot of fun doing it! The girls absolutely LOVE their new room!

After the room was painted, I decided to rearrange. I also had another thought; the girls ALWAYS ask to sleep in each other's beds. Up until this point, they were each still in toddler beds, which they were definately outgrowing. I never let them climb into each other's bed because I knew no way would they both fit into one lol! But I shared a bed with my sister when I was little and remembered how much fun we used to have whispering to each other and reading books under the covers with a flashlight. They without a doubt needed bigger beds, and twin bunk beds would be the best solution, but I didn't feel like they were ready for that yet. The little one I felt is too little for the top bunk, and my older daughter occassionally sleepwalks. So since they always wanted to share a bed, I figured why not let them?? It will only work for a few years, then I'm sure they'll both be ready for their own bed again, and by then I think bunk beds WILL work.  So here is their new bed, and they both feel like a princess in it! And they are indeed loving sharing a bed each night . . . . sometimes I stand outside their door for a few minutes, listening to them whisper and giggle with each other. I know from experience they are creating memories that will last a lifetime!

Thanks for stopping by, and until next time . . . .
